Teisha Childers, Counselor
Hello! I am Teisha Childers, counselor for Rising Star ISD. I have been with the district for 15 years and have worn many different hats. I am very excited to be in the full-time counseling position this year. I have posted links to the guidance curriculum that I will be implementing this year, as well as links for our Bully and Violent Threat Report Form and the Counselor Referral Form. This form allows students, teachers, and parents to let me know that they would like me to meet with them or a friend or child to discuss things that maybe happening in their lives right now. I am also going to provide a referral to services information sheet that has local resources for seeking help outside of the school. I will be using the Character Counts guidance curriculum throughout this year. Please call or email with any questions regarding college or dual credit, counseling services, substance abuse, educational planning, financial aid, or CTE. I am happy to help with whatever you need.

Rising Star ISD Comprehensive School Counseling Program

The Rising Star ISD counseling curriculum will provide assistance to all Rising Star ISD students in developing proper character etiquette while providing assistance to students in exploration of post-secondary guidance, as well as help families build and strengthen positive relationships with their children through community and school services.

The counseling program is important in the educational process because it helps bridge the gap connecting the education from the classroom with its real-world use. It also lends effort towards finding ways to motivate students to want more and to be more than they ever thought possible. It will help and show them through experiences in career exploration that will hopefully build interest that will be used towards their overall success.

The reasons that students must gain these competencies is to strengthen mental health, self-concept, and learn reasoning skills to make good decisions directly impacting their lives. They will gain insight about how to work efficiently with other people; as well, practice in becoming respectful, responsible, and helpful members of society. The lessons will also touch on empathy, sympathy, and conflict resolution skills to allow them to view the world as a whole.

The school counseling program will allow students to develop their full potential to access resources towards post-secondary planning that they didn’t even know existed. The school counselor will help guide students through the learning process and transitions needed to move beyond high school.

Through this program we hope to improve CCMR accountability ratings for post-secondary readiness, along with positive school experience surveys from students and staff.

The main goals for this program are to help students with building positive relationships, aid in strengthening their reasoning skills, provide strong character education, and prepare them for post-secondary life. Different resources used to provide these things for students are visits to college fairs and career exploration days at TSTC and leadership seminars at Region 14. We also get visits from The Open Door teaching their relationship building curriculum, “Go for the Gold’, along with visits from Texas Workforce Solutions to discuss employability skills, career pathways, and then use VR technology to allow students to get some exploration time with different careers. We use the Character Counts Guidance curriculum that includes social and emotional learning, along with various books and clips of motivational speakers pinned within different guidance lessons throughout the entire district.

Current terms that are used throughout the program include: “Kindness is Contagious”, “Growth Mindset…If you think it, you can do it”, and “Don’t Settle”.
